The Best Way to Store Coffee to Maintain Freshness

by Kaitlin Graham 04 Mar 2024

Once you break the seal on a bag of freshly roasted coffee, it starts to lose freshness. However, that freshness can be maintained if it’s stored properly.

How Should I Store Coffee?

The best way to preserve the quality of whole or ground beans is to keep them in a dark, cool place in an airtight container. Keeping beans away from light, heat, air, and moisture is the most important thing you can do to protect their freshness. We recommend keeping them in a sealed, opaque container in a cool cupboard. Avoid putting the container in a cupboard near the stove or a window that gets a lot of sun.

How Long Does Coffee Keep For?

When stored properly, roasted coffee beans can last for 6 to 9 months. The first two weeks after a new bag is opened are peak freshness, but using a good storage container makes beans last longer. While coffee doesn’t technically expire, the fresher the beans, the better the brew, so we recommend buying small batches of coffee and using them quickly.
